Veteran tight end Johnny Mitchell has convinced the Dallas Cowboys that he’s ready to come out of retirement and resume his NFL career.

The Cowboys on Thursday said they had signed Mitchell, a 1992 first-round draft choice of the New York Jets, to a one-year contract. The terms were not disclosed.

“He wants to play and we’re happy to have him,” Cowboy owner Jerry Jones said.

The team put defensive tackle Mike Ulufale, who had knee surgery Nov. 1, on injured reserve to make room for Mitchell.

Herschel Walker and six other Cowboys were fined along with seven Green Bay Packers for a minor scuffle during Dallas’ 21-6 victory Monday night.

A total of $64,000 was levied against the 14 players. Dallas cornerback Charlie Williams, cornerback Alundis Brice and rookie defensive end Kavika Pittman were fined $5,000 each for fighting.

The fracas followed the last of seven field goals by Chris Boniol--a 28-yarder with 20 seconds left in the game to match the NFL record.
