The Harvard-Westlake High boys’ basketball team picked up where it left off with an 81-55 nonleague victory over Antelope Valley on Monday night at Harvard-Westlake.

Seniors Jason and Jarron Collins, beginning their fourth varsity season, led the Wolverines with 18 and 13 points, respectively.

Senior guards Rico Cabrera (14 points) and Ryan Smiley (12) also scored in double figures, and seven reserves scored.

Harvard-Westlake, defending State Division III champion and ranked first in The Times’ regional preseason poll, jumped to a 12-0 lead and extended the margin to 43-21 by halftime.

“We all wanted to play a real game,” Harvard-Westlake Coach Greg Hilliard said. “We’d played a scrimmage, but it was good to play a game and deal with the crowd and electricity and the locker-room tension.”

Second-ranked Antelope Valley, 18-8 last season, was led by center Le’Tre Kelly, who scored 18 points. But the contest was lopsided from start to finish.

“It’s a good start against a good, strong team,” Jarron Collins said.

Jarron, 6 feet 9, and Jason, 6-10, who have signed with Stanford, dominated play beneath the basket, forcing the Antelopes into a strategy of long-distance shooting that proved unsuccessful.
