West L.A. Makes Its Bowl Debut

It will be a day of firsts for West Los Angeles College today when the Oilers make their first bowl appearance, against Mt. San Jacinto in the inaugural Los Angeles County Bowl. Kickoff is 1 p.m. at West L.A.
West L.A. (7-3), which finished third in the Western State Conference Southern Division, has one of the state’s top offenses, averaging 413 yards a game. Romell Knutt leads the Oilers with 970 yards in 173 carries.
Mt. San Jacinto (7-3), which finished third in the Foothill Conference, is led by Mike Anderson, the state’s second-leading rusher with 1,511 yards and 13 touchdowns in 179 carries.
In today’s other Southland bowl games, Bakersfield (9-1), the state’s fifth-ranked team, plays host to No. 8 Long Beach (8-2) in the Shrine Potato Bowl; No. 3 Valley (9-1) plays host to No. 6 Hancock (9-1) in the No Fear Bowl; No. 9 Chaffey (9-1) plays host to No. 17 Mt. San Antonio (7-3) in the Southern California Bowl; No. 10 Grossmont (9-1) plays No. 18 El Camino in the Simple Green Orange County Bowl at Orange Coast College and No. 13 Cerritos (8-2) plays host to No. 12 Moorpark in the GMC Pontiac Strawberry Bowl.
