CSUN Volleyball Waits for Other Sneaker to Fall

Cal State Northridge won its first Big Sky Conference women’s volleyball title and the Matadors reached the NCAA tournament. Now they wait to see if the season will hold up.

Associate athletic director Judy Brame said self-reporting paperwork will be submitted to the NCAA and the Big Sky Conference by the end of the week because of the team’s connection with former assistant coach Tuong Nguyen.

“We have found that in fact Tuong was listed as a volunteer assistant coach at both Van Nuys and here,” said Brame, who requested information on Nguyen from Van Nuys earlier this month. “You can’t do that.”

Brame said Nguyen’s role at Van Nuys started in an advisory capacity but changed to coaching without the university knowing.

Nguyen has been relieved of coaching duties by Northridge and Van Nuys.

In addition to admitting to the violation, Northridge will propose a way to avoid a recurrence.

“We will recommend that there be a change in processing of volunteer coaches [at the university],” Brame said. “Something to the effect that they say they are not now, and do not plan on, coaching at a high school.”
