University Girls Edge Trabuco Hills

Jerri Armendariz made one free throw with no time remaining to give University a 59-58 victory over Trabuco Hills in the second round of the South Coast Holiday girls’ basketball tournament Tuesday at University High.

With the score tied at 58 Armendariz, who had 29 points and seven assists, drove to the basket and drew a foul at the buzzer.

Monique Mathews had 13 points and nine rebounds for the Trojans (2-0).

Senior Kristina Runk, a transfer from Colleyville, Texas, had 24 points including six three-pointers and Emily Deeley had 18 points, including five three-pointers, for Trabuco Hills (1-1).

In another second-round game:

Esperanza 55, Newport Harbor 49--Leah Combs scored 18 points and Allison Gerber had 14 for Esperanza (4-0). Breanna Badorek scored 19 points for Newport Harbor.

In the first round of the Brea Olinda tournament:

Cerritos 58, Aliso Niguel 37--Brooke Hyman scored 14 points for Aliso Niguel.

In the Estancia tournament:

Huntington Beach 53, Troy 44--Phouangmaly Pravongviengkham scored 15 points and Stephanie Draeger had eight points and 10 rebounds for Huntington Beach (1-0) in a pool-play game.

In the Fairmont tournament:

Fairmont 52, Southern California Christian 29--Katy Barstow broke her school record of 18 rebounds, grabbing 28 for Fairmont (3-1). Barstow also scored a game-high 18 points.

In nonleague games:

El Toro 64, Sonora 34--Freshman Giulianna Mendiola scored 23 points for the Chargers (5-0), who outscored visiting Sonora, 24-8, in the first quarter.

In the first round of the Century boys’ basketball tournament:

Dana Hills 59, Palm Desert 46--Huber Souza scored 22 points for the Dolphins (3-0), who led by only three at halftime before pulling away.

In the first round of the Tournament of Champions:

Calvary Chapel 52, Perris 48--Joe Ortiz scored 21 points, Kevin Falconer had 13 and Garid Beeler 12 for Calvary Chapel (5-0).

Villa Park 48, Long Beach Wilson 47--Eric Chenowith had 21 points, 17 rebounds and 10 blocked shots for Villa Park.

In the first round of the Vista tournament:

Edison 72, Vista 59--Forward Dimitri Karnezis had 20 points and guard Kevin Hemsley had 16 for Edison (1-0).

In nonleague games:

Anaheim 67, Santa Ana 50--Tru Guyen had 25 points, 18 rebounds and five steals and teammate Shu Todoroki had 13 assists for Anaheim (3-1).

Loara 62, Orange Lutheran 47--Martin Banda scored 29 points for Loara (3-2).

In nonleague boys’ soccer:

La Habra 2, Whittier La Serna 0--Matt Brown and Miguel Perez scored for La Habra (2-0).

Canyon 2, Valencia 2--Julian Freeman scored both goals for Valencia (1-1-1). Martin Corona and Brando Colema scored for Canyon (4-0-1).

In nonleague girls’ soccer:

Brea Olinda 2, El Dorado 1--Ally Mauzey scored both goals for Brea Olinda (4-0).

Estancia 2, Westminster 1--Jennifer Brunick scored two goals for Estancia (4-1).

Saddleback 1, Costa Mesa 0--Griselda Ramirez scored in the first half and goalkeepers Olga Gomez and Sylvia Lopez combined for 16 saves in the shutout for Saddleback (3-0).

Sonora 4, Cerritos Gahr 0--Stacy Keen scored twice for Sonora (4-1). Laura Siapin and Riannon Griego also scored.

In nonleague girls’ water polo:

Mission Viejo 10, El Toro 4--Chelsea Rowlands scored seven goals for Mission Viejo (4-2).

In nonleague wrestling:

Newport Harbor 49, Estancia 24--Newport Harbor (1-0) recorded four pins in the match with 160 pounder Emmett Olvera of the Sailors recording the fastest fall at 22 seconds.

Santa Ana 43, Irvine 23--Richard Roman (119) and Leo Vargas (135) won key matches for No. 3 Santa Ana (1-1). Andrew Pena (125) and Tim Testerman (160) won with pins for Irvine, ranked fifth in the county.

Troy 33, Laguna Hills 30--Matt Baldini pinned Bob Fields in 1:00 to give the Warriors, who were trailing by three points before the final match, the victory. Troy (2-0) won the first four weight divisions to take an early 18-0 lead.
