Eddie Robinson Gets Some Help

The Louisiana Board of Regents, which oversees all state colleges, on Thursday urged Grambling to let Eddie Robinson, college football’s winningest coach, have one last shot at another winning season. Robinson, 77, has had losing records his last two seasons but only seven in 54 seasons as the school’s coach.

Dave Roberts, offensive coordinator under Lou Holtz at Notre Dame, was hired as Baylor’s coach. Roberts, 49, replaces Chuck Reedy, who led the Bears to a 4-7 record, their worst since 1978. . . . Tony Samuel, who for the last decade has helped shape Nebraska’s powerful defense, was named coach at New Mexico State. Samuel, 41, takes over a program that was 1-10 this season and has had only two winning seasons since 1968. . . . Bill Stewart resigned after three seasons as Virginia Military Institute’s coach, amid reports he used a racial slur at a black player during practice. . . . Bruce Snyder, who coached No. 2 Arizona State to its first undefeated regular season since 1975 and only its second Rose Bowl berth, received the Bear Bryant Award as coach of the year. . . . San Francisco 49er offensive coordinator Marc Trestman withdrew from consideration as coach at Minnesota, according to a televised report in Minneapolis.
