A driver was killed Sunday night and his two passengers were injured when their car careened out of control on Pacific Coast Highway, hit a pickup truck and then flipped before coming to a stop in the Bolsa Chica State Beach parking lot, police said.

The driver, identified only as a man, possibly in his 20s, had apparently been driving erratically before the accident, said Lt. Clyde Stuart of the Huntington Beach Police Department. The driver lost control and sideswiped the truck while driving his car south on Pacific Coast Highway near Warner Avenue about 7 p.m., Stuart said.

The two passengers suffered minor to moderate injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital, Stuart said.

Police were looking for the driver of the truck, a late model silver Ford Ranger, who left the scene and continued south on the highway, Stuart said. Although not considered the cause of the accident, the driver should have stopped, Stuart said.

“The driver should have stopped regardless of the whether it was his fault or not,” Stuart said.
