Imperial Highway on Council Agenda

Share

After a contentious election campaign this fall in which City Council candidates battled over a proposal for for widening and landscaping Imperial Highway, the topic is on the agenda for tonight’s council meeting.

Meeting in closed session, council members will consider requesting a court ruling on the legality of a ballot initiative drawn up by opponents of a plan.

Councilman John M. Gullixson, who supports the project, said the initiative, which would put the proposal to a vote of residents, may not be valid.

Gullixson said ballot measures that restrict the ability of municipalities to carry out road projects have been stricken in courts because they may inadvertently create public safety problems.

The council will also consider a proposal from Councilman Henry W. Wedaa, who opposed the Imperial Highway plan during the election campaign, to conduct an environmental impact report on the project.

The council meets at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 4845 Casa Loma Ave. Information: (714) 961-7100.
