Simi Valley’s Gonzalez Beats Royal on Bounce

John Gonzalez scored on a rebound of his own shot Wednesday to lift the Simi Valley High boys’ soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Royal in a Marmonte League opener at Royal.

Gonzalez scored in the 20th minute. The senior forward beat Highlander defender Miguel Ruiz down the left sideline. Gonzalez’ initial shot was blocked by goalie Matt Rainer. But sweeper Sean Gesell missed a clearing attempt and Gonzalez scored from five yards on the rebound.

“It wasn’t a good shot, but I was so close in, and the wind was blowing so hard, the goalie couldn’t handle it,” Gonzalez said.

Royal (3-2, 0-1) outshot the Pioneers (4-0-1, 1-0), 14-10.
