Westminster Girls Edge Santa Ana Valley on Late Free Throw

Erin Arganda made one of two free throws with 17 seconds left, and Westminster then forced a turnover on Santa Ana Valley’s next possession to seal a 48-47 victory in the Bolsa Grande girls’ basketball tournament.

Janet Glasby led Westminster (6-2) with 18 points and 10 rebounds in the pool-play game.

In another Bolsa Grande tournament game:

Newport Harbor 74, Magnolia 11--The 10th-ranked Sailors led, 46-0, at halftime of the pool play game. Breanna Badorek and Colleen Eadie scored 15 points each and sophomore Katie Dunne had 12 for Newport Harbor (3-3).

In the Artesia Tournament:

Cypress 56, El Monte Mountain View 18--Freshman Michelle Mitchell had 15 points and Stacy Silva had 16 rebounds to lead Cypress (5-3) in the consolation victory.

In the second round of Gary Raya Co-Ed Tournament:

Aliso Niguel 41, Valencia 38--Brooke Hyman scored a game-high 22 points as Aliso Niguel rallied from a 25-19 halftime deficit, tying the score, 28-28, at the end of three quarters.

In pool play at the Vista Tournament:

University 64, San Diego Scripps Ranch 56--Jerri Armendariz and Lyz Day led a second-half rally for the Trojans (4-2). Armendariz had 27 points and six steals and Day scored 22 points, including six three-pointers.

University played most of the game without forward Monique Mathews, who left the game two minutes into the second quarter after injuring her arm. Mathews averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds last season.

In nonleague girls’ soccer:

Valencia 2, Santa Ana 1--Lauren Jacobs gave Valencia a 2-0 lead, heading in the winning goal off a corner kick from Ari Bermosk early in the second half. Alejandra Nunez also scored for Valencia (4-0-1). Santa Ana is 3-2.

In nonleague girls’ water polo:

Canyon 6, Santa Margarita 4--The Comanches scored three consecutive goals in the fourth quarter to break a 3-3 tie and give unranked Canyon (7-4) the victory over sixth-ranked Santa Margarita (7-3).

Yarnee Cha, who had three goals, Lauren Volcan and Jamie Miller scored in the final quarter for Canyon, which has had one-goal losses to seventh-ranked Newport Harbor, No. 9 Edison, No. 10 Valencia and unranked Costa Mesa.
