Mendiola’s 30 Paces El Toro in Tournament

Giuliana Mendiola scored a game-high 30 points to lead El Toro to a 58-32 victory over Orange Lutheran Thursday in the first round of the Laguna Beach girls’ basketball tournament.

El Toro (8-1) advanced to play Irvine in one semifinal at 5 p.m. today. Orange Lutheran plays Western in the consolation round at 2 p.m.

In other tournament games:

Irvine 61, Western 58--Jami Allred had 17 points for Irvine (5-4), which trailed by eight after the first quarter.

Laguna Beach 53, Long Beach St. Anthony 40--April Chambers scored 26 points for host Laguna Beach (4-4). The Artists play Brethren Christian at 6:30 tonight in one semifinal.

Brethren Christian 52, Trabuco Hills 43--Rachael MacDonald scored 19 points and had 13 rebounds for Brethren Christian. Ann-Marie Harbour scored 11 points for the Warriors (5-2).

Kristin Runks made four three-pointers and had 20 points for Trabuco Hills.

In the Costa Mesa tournament:

Villa Park 49, San Luis Obispo 48--San Luis Obispo made a three-pointer in the closing seconds, but Villa Park (3-6) held on for the victory. Missy Bynon scored 17 points and Jennifer O’Keefe scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Villa Park (3-6).

San Clemente 63, Dana Hills 27--Amanda Engle had 14 points and Kelley Kruger had eight points, eight assists and 11 steals for San Clemente (7-3).

Capistrano Valley 58, Artesia 24--Jenny Jennings made seven three-pointers and scored 30 points for Capistrano Valley (6-4). It was the fourth time this season that Jennings has made seven three-pointers in a game.

Westminster 50, Montebello Schurr 37--Janet Glasby scored 15 points for Westminster. Tara and Erin Moore each scored nine points for the Lions (8-3).

Lisa Moya scored 17 points for Schurr.

In the Garden Grove tournament:

Foothill 56, Paramount 21--Foothill’s defense held Paramount scoreless in the second quarter and led, 29-11, at the half. Jen Inmon and Kerry Brunansky each scored 16 points to lead the Knights (6-5), who play tournament host Garden Grove today in the second round.

Garden Grove 74, Anaheim 35--Katie Werdel had 14 points and 16 rebounds to lead Garden Grove, which plays Foothill today.

In the first round of the Greene County (Tenn.) tournament:

Woodbridge 74, Afton (Tenn.) Chuckey-Doak 49--Even though there was no shot clock used in the game, it didn’t faze Woodbridge, which dominated from the opening tipoff.

Cathy Joens had 18 points, including eight rebounds, to lead the Warriors (7-2). Krissy Duperron had 14 points and six blocked shots. Woodbridge plays Columbia Central (Tenn.) today in a second-round game.
