Ocean View Stages Comeback to Advance

Ocean View rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit and defeated Anchorage (Alaska) East, 56-54, Friday in the second round of the Marina girls’ basketball tournament at Marina.

Ocean View, (10-1), ranked fifth in the county, trailed, 29-20, at the end of the first half, but outscored East (9-3), the third-ranked team in Alaska, 20-6, in the third quarter. Jennifer Tuiolosega scored 14 of her 27 points in the quarter.

Sharon Shelton scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Seahawks. Anna Lembke scored 12 points and had seven rebounds.

In other second-round games:

Marina 66, Newport Harbor 52--Chanda McLeod scored 18 points and Natalie Nakase and Marisa Emde had 17 each for sixth-ranked Marina (9-1).

Mater Dei 67, Fountain Valley 59--Lori Hurlbut scored 24 points for fourth-ranked Mater Dei, which advanced to today’s semifinals. Kelly Boeke had 16 points for Fountain Valley, including 10 in the first quarter.

In the quarterfinals of the Costa Mesa Tournament:

Capistrano Valley 40, Chino Don Lugo 30--Capistrano Valley (7-4) outscored Don Lugo, 23-8, in the first half to advance to the semifinals against Costa Mesa. Jenny Jennings made six three-pointers and scored 22 points for the Cougars. Diane Taurasi scored 19 points for Don Lugo (7-3).

San Clemente 71, North Torrance 43--Taryn Commins scored 12 points and had nine rebounds in a quarterfinal victory over San Clemente (8-3). Colleen Turnbull scored 17 points for the Tritons.

San Clemente plays Westminsterin the semifinals at 6:20 p.m. today.

In the Garden Grove tournament:

Foothill 48, Garden Grove 35--Kerry Brunansky scored 14 points for Foothill (7-5) in the semifinal victory, advancing to play Inglewood in the final.

In the second round of the Greene County (Tenn.) tournament:

Columbia (Tenn.) Central 63, Woodbridge 39--Columbia Central’s patient offense broke down the Warrior defense early as Woodbridge fell behind, 13-5, after one quarter and trailed by 15 points at halftime.

Krissy Dupperon scored 11 points for Woodbridge (7-3), which shot less than 30% from the field. Columbia Central is 11-1.

In the semifinals of the Laguna Beach tournament:

Brethren Christian 55, Laguna Beach 31--Cindy Oparah scored 19 points to help Brethren Christian advance to the tournament championship game. Rachel MacDonald scored 14 points and Natasha Saran added 13 for the Warriors. April Chambers scored 16 points for host Laguna Beach.

Irvine 62, El Toro 54--Tyree Woodruff made six three-pointers and scored 23 points to lift Irvine (6-4) past El Toro. The Vaqueros, who play Brethren Christian in today’s final, outscored El Toro, 25-11, in the fourth quarter.

Giuliani Mendiola scored 32 points, including 15 during the third quarter to give the Chargers a 43-38 lead.

In a first-round game at the Santa Maria Righetti girls’ basketball tournament:

San Luis Obispo Mission Prep 48, University 42--Jerri Armendariz scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for University (4-5), which played without leading scorer and rebounder Monique Mathews, who injured her elbow during a game last week.

In the Sunshine girls’ basketball Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Los Alamitos 46, Spring Valley (S.C) 44--Christa Ellis made the winning layup with a minute left in the game. Ellis finished the game with 14 points.
