Glendale Splits Doubleheader in Barrett’s Debut as Coach
Denny Barrett’s debut as baseball coach at Glendale College started on a down note and ended with a positive one when the Vaqueros won the second game of a doubleheader in the Rio Hondo tournament.
Dan Sereno and Dave Harley combined on a two-hitter for the Vaqueros (1-1) in a 2-0 victory over Rio Hondo in a pool-play game.
Earlier, David Boger and Brett Niles hit home runs for Glendale in a 4-3, 10-inning loss to Citrus .
Oxnard 10, Compton 2--Freshman left-hander Mike Corral pitched a six-hitter to pace the Condors in their season opener at the Citrus-Rio Hondo tournament.
In a later game, the Condors lost to Rancho Santiago, 15-5.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Chapman 67, Cal Lutheran 58--Junior forward Brandie Murrish scored 18 points and senior center Evi Orolagas had 17 points and nine rebounds for the Regals (10-6) in a nonconference game at Chapman (13-5).
MEN’S TENNIS
Pepperdine 6, Nevada 1--The Waves (5-1), ranked sixth in the nation, recorded singles victories in five of six matches in a nonconference match at Malibu.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
CS Northridge d. UC Irvine, 15-9, 15-10, 15-3--Outside hitter Jason Hughes returned to the Matadors and had 13 kills in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Northridge (5-2, 3-2 in conference play).
Hughes had his eligibility restored after completing an intersession class and pulling his grade-point average above the minimum required for eligibility.
