Three-Point Mark Didn’t Fall Easily

Capistrano Valley’s Jenny Jennings got a lot of attention last week as she pursued Debbie Fischer’s single-season three-point basket record.

Most figured there was no way Jennings could fail to get the record against Dana Hills on Thursday. She needed two to tie (105) and three to break the record Fischer set in 1989-90 for Edison, and Jennings had set a school single-game record with nine three-point baskets against Dana Hills in the teams’ first meeting, a 38-point victory.

But the story of Thursday’s game was Jamie Fowler. She’s the player who guarded Jennings and--surprisingly--disappointed those fans who attended the game to watch history.

“I was sick [bronchitis] and injured [sprained ankle] for the last game, and I had to sit there and watch No. 33 hit nine three-pointers,” Fowler said Thursday after Capistrano Valley’s 61-41 victory. “My goal was to shut her down.”

Holding Jennings to two three-point baskets (in the game’s final 11 minutes) and 10 points is about as good as one could hope for. Jennings is averaging 20.6 points. She got the record Saturday with three three-pointers against La Crescenta Crescenta Valley.

The two seniors even engaged in on-court banter as the game became more one-sided, according to Fowler: “[Jennings] was saying, ‘Why am I still in?’ I told her, ‘You’re supposed to be making three-pointers.’ ”

Woodbridge center Chris Burgess is hopeful podiatry can relieve the pain in his right foot enough for him to play basketball this week.

Burgess’ father, Ken, said Monday the 6-foot-11 senior will see a foot doctor today, to be fitted with a pad on a bone bruise between the big and second toe under the right foot.

The injury started bothering Burgess last Thursday. Though he played the Warriors’ Friday and Saturday games, he finds it difficult to run, Ken said. He tried playing with a pad on Saturday, but it did not fit properly.

Burgess said if he could not get a pad, he might be unable to play Wednesday against Newport Harbor.

Erin Stovall, who helped Woodbridge win state titles the last two years, attended the Warriors’ game against Mater Dei Saturday at the Bren Center. Stovall, a senior, said she’s looking forward to playing basketball at her new school, Honolulu (Hawaii) Iolani. Practice begins next week.

Stovall averaged 20.2 points and had 112 steals last year. She will attend Virginia in the fall.

Stovall’s not the only all-county player who will be at Virginia next year. Deanna Mitchelson, a Times all-county second-team player as a sophomore while playing at Aliso Niguel, is now at Bakersfield High.

Mitchelson, a 6-2 center, was the county’s leading rebounder her sophomore season (19.7) while scoring 10.1 points. She’s averaging 15.8 points and 12.2 rebounds for the Drillers.

Aliso Niguel has had the county’s leading rebounders the last two seasons (junior Brooke Hyman averaged 14.6 rebounds as a sophomore). That, and given Woodbridge’s No. 3 ranking in the county, makes for an intriguing question: What if Mitchelson and Stovall had stayed?

Marina, sixth in last week’s girls’ basketball poll, fell behind Fountain Valley, 48-30, on Thursday. Coach Pete Bonny pulled all five starters. After the Barons scored, making it a 20-point deficit, Marina’s reserves went on a 23-7 run to pull within four points in the final minute. They lost, 60-53.
