Tree-Planting Group Might Join Park Panel
ReLeaf Costa Mesa, an ambitious organization working to plant 2,000 trees by 2000, might soon be granted a voice on the parks commission.
The City Council this week gave tentative approval to a proposal that would give the nonprofit group a nonvoting post on the Parks, Recreational Facilities and Parkways Commission. Council members agreed to schedule the matter for a formal vote in about 30 days.
The committee member would work with commissioners on ReLeaf’s various projects and help streamline the process of planning and obtaining permission for plantings, said Councilwoman Libby Cowan, who initiated the proposal.
ReLeaf, launched nearly four years ago, already has spruced up Costa Mesa with 1,000 trees of various types.
Members also are active in Neighbors to Neighbors, a cleanup program in which volunteers improve blighted areas with plant life, graffiti removal and repairs.
The next ReLeaf planting, involving 90 trees, is set for 9 a.m. Saturday at 21st Street and Santa Ana Avenue.
