Goalie Resor Leads Cypress Past 10th-Ranked El Dorado

Matt Resor stopped eight shots and recorded his 13th shutout of the season as Cypress defeated 10th-ranked El Dorado, 3-0, in an Empire League boys’ soccer game Wednesday at Cypress.

Resor, who has five shutouts and has allowed only two goals in league play, made several diving stops to keep the Golden Hawks (17-4-4, 5-1-1) scoreless.

Steve Ponce scored in the first 15 minutes for Cypress (16-4-1, 5-2), and Mike Meza and Vince Cardoza added second-half goals.

In other Empire League games:

Kennedy 1, Katella 0--Pat Acton scored in the 50th minute for Kennedy (9-6-1, 3-4) off an assist from Jon Nitta.

Loara 3, Century 1--Ben Zimmerman, Eduardo Hernandez and Rafael Barajas each scored for Loara (7-8-4, 4-2-1). Victor Guerrero scored the only goal for Century (3-11-4, 1-6).

In the Century League:

Canyon 2, Villa Park 1--Young Gin scored the winner midway through the second half for Canyon (14-5-2, 5-2). Scott Silka scored Canyon’s first goal and teammate Brian Boyles had eight saves.

El Modena 1, Santa Ana Valley 0--Sergio Viera posted his 10th shutout of the season for league-leading El Modena (12-2-3, 5-1-1). Viera, a first-year goalkeeper, saved his second penalty kick of the year in the victory. Freshman Mauro Barron scored the game-winner 10 minutes into second half for El Modena, which played the final 35 minutes with only 10 players because of a red card. Santa Ana Valley is 10-3-2, 3-2-1.

Orange 5, Foothill 0--Alex Garcia scored three goals to lead fifth-ranked Orange (15-4-2, 4-3), which is in fourth place.

In the Freeway League:

Sunny Hills 2, Sonora 0 (OT)--Mike Morgan and Danny Crosley scored overtime goals for Sunny Hills (10-8-3, 6-0-1). Sonora is 6-9-2 and 3-2-2 in league.

In the Golden West League:

Ocean View 4, Tustin 0--Dinh Lai scored two goals for Ocean View (8-12, 3-5). Goalkeeper Sergio Vargas made 12 saves for Tustin (0-12-3, 0-7-1).

Santa Ana 3, Westminster 0--Juan Reyes assisted on goals by Israel Lazo, Arnulfo Garcia and Hector Candelas for top-ranked Santa Ana (16-0-4, 6-0-2).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Estancia 1, Costa Mesa 0--Jose Quintana scored the game-winning goal in the 50th minute for Estancia (14-4, 5-2). Goalkeeper Carlos Loza made 14 saves for Costa Mesa (1-15-2, 0-7).

Laguna Hills 3, University 2--Ryan Johnson scored with six minutes remaining to break a 2-2 tie for visiting Laguna Hills (9-9-4, 4-2-1). After University’s Kevin Burrows scored his second goal early in the second half to give the Trojans a 2-1 lead, Laguna Hills’ Dane Swango scored in the 58th minute to tie it, 2-2.

In the Sea View League:

El Toro 3, Irvine 3--Scott McLain scored his third goal on a penalty kick with two minutes remaining for host Irvine (8-8-3, 1-4-2), which rallied from a 3-1 second-half deficit to tie El Toro (12-4-5, 3-2-2), ranked ninth in the county.

Irvine’s Ryan Wong was tackled in the penalty area, drawing a foul to set up McLain’s tying penalty kick. McLain is the first Irvine player to score three goals in a game.

Julian Gaiton scored two first-half goals for El Toro and Wade Fraser added one in the 50th minute for a 3-1 lead.

McLain scored his second goal in the 60th minute, then added the game-winner 18 minutes later.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 1, Trabuco Hills 0--Chris Latini scored the game-winner in the 50th minute for Capistrano Valley (4-2-2). Trabuco Hills is 5-10 and 1-6 in league.

Mater Dei 1, Dana Hills 1--Unranked Dana Hills almost had the upset after Yosuke Utsumi scored midway through the second half. But Greg Becthtold tied the score for second-ranked Mater Dei to avoid the loss. Mater Dei is 15-1-3, 4-1-2. Dana Hills is 6-6-1, 4-2-1.

San Clemente 3, Mission Viejo 0--Brothers Zach and Adam Niederhoff combined with Matt Hall to score for San Clemente (12-3-6, 3-3-1).

In the Sunset League:

Huntington Beach 2, Marina 0--Sam Semingson scored both goals in the victory for Huntington Beach (6-8-3, 3-4). Semingson got assists from Aaron McAthy and Mike Costanzo.

Los Alamitos 3, Fountain Valley 2--Richie Mularkey scored the first goal and the game-winner in the 63rd minute to help Los Alamitos (8-11, 1-6) upset fourth-ranked Fountain Valley (14-3-2, 6-1). Nick Cognito scored in the 45th minute, on an assist from Justin Waldrop, to tie the score, 2-2, for Los Alamitos. Ray Sarafian and Robby Kaessner each scored for Fountain Valley.

In Garden Grove League girls’ soccer:

La Quinta 4, Rancho Alamitos 1--La Quinta trailed, 1-0, at the half before scoring four goals. Sarah Skinner had two and April Lovett and Kahana Rapport had the others for the Aztecs.

Pacifica 4, Garden Grove 0--Amanda Freed scored three goals for visiting Pacifica (13-6, 10-0), which clinched its third consecutive league title.

In Pacific Coast League girls’ water polo:

Costa Mesa 12, Laguna Hills 7--Allison Alastuey scored four goals for host Costa Mesa (9-10, 2-1).

University 14, Aliso Niguel 8--Erin Hayes scored six goals and Ashley Carlton added three for host University (9-3, 3-0), which won the league title.

In the Sea View League:

Santa Margarita 14, El Toro 8--Julie Egus and Shannon Lyle each scored four goals in the victory for fifth-ranked Santa Margarita (12-5, 3-1). Katie Ferguson added three goals and Jamie Kroeze had seven saves for the Eagles. Ashley Pyka led El Toro (10-9, 1-3) with five goals.

Newport Harbor 12, Corona del Mar 4--Jocelyne Manderino scored four goals and Alden Moore had three for Newport Harbor (2-2). Meagan Hardt scored twice and Julie Norton had one goal and nine steals for Corona del Mar (6-9, 2-2).
