Orange Coast Running Backs Commit to Four-Year Schools

Orange Coast College running backs William League and Chet Walker have committed to play football at four-year colleges, Pirate Coach Bill Workman announced.

League will attend Eastern Washington. He set an OCC record with a 91-yard touchdown run last season. Walker has chosen to play at Sacramento State. He missed five games last season because of a separated shoulder but led the Pirates in scoring with seven touchdowns.

Workman also announced the following signings: kicker Nate Bennett (Louisville), cornerback John Harcar (Humboldt State), offensive linemen Keith Gray (Eastern Kentucky), Jeremy Cohen (Nevada) and Scott Ehlert (Graceland) and tight end/fullback Leon Smith (Chapman). Reserve running back Kai Balubar has walked on at Hawaii.

Several Orange County swimming standouts are scheduled to participate in the California State Swimming Championships, beginning today at the Industry Hills Aquatic Center Pool.

Irvine High sophomore Amanda Beard, an Olympic gold medalist, Santa Margarita senior Philippe Demers and Mission Viejo senior Peter Florcyzk are expected to be among 47 swimmers competing in the meet. Other Orange County participants include Steve West, James Davidson and Steve McLeod. The finals will be Sunday at the Belmont Plaza pool in Long Beach.

The Laguna Beach girls’ volleyball club 18-and-under team won the 224-team Nike Las Vegas invitational this week, defeating Bakersfield Kern River in the championship final, 15-7, 15-6.

Laguna Beach was led by Melissa Snow, who attends Newport Harbor High, Michelle Chambers and Jami Bari of Dana Hills High, setter Carolyn Kittell of Laguna Beach, Kathy Cook of Irvine and Shannon Redfern of Santa Margarita.
