Waves Send Fullerton to Fourth Straight Loss

Left-hander Randy Wolf pitched his ninth career complete game and shortstop David Matranga hit a grand slam in the fifth to lead Pepperdine to a 4-2 victory over Cal State Fullerton in a nonconference baseball game Friday at Pepperdine.

Wolf (2-1) gave up seven hits, struck out six and walked two as the Waves (3-8) stopped a four-game losing streak.

The Titans (7-6), ranked sixth in the nation by Collegiate Baseball, took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. With two outs, Aaron Rowand and Mike Lamb singled, then both scored on Scott Seal’s double.

In the fifth, Michael Kramer and Chris Cosbey had one-out singles and Rob Reid then walked to load the bases for the Waves. Matranga followed with his fourth home run of the season to give Pepperdine a 4-2 lead.

Matt Wise (1-1), who pitched for two seasons at Pepperdine, took the loss for Fullerton, which has lost four consecutive games.

The teams meet again at 1 p.m. today and Sunday at Fullerton.

In the Long Beach State Baseball Classic:

Long Beach State 10, Notre Dame 8--Steve Doherty went four for four with four RBIs and Toby Sanchez was two for three with three runs scored for Long Beach State (6-5), which led, 9-0, after four innings.

Marcus Jones (2-2) went seven innings on the mound, giving up 10 hits and five earned runs. Jones struck out seven and did not walk a batter.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Chapman 76, UC Santa Cruz 70--Mark Weitala scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Chapman (15-9). Greg Evans added 16 points and Pete Sverkos had 14. Adam Todd led Santa Cruz (12-9) with a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds.

In Big West Conference women’s basketball:

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 67, Cal State Fullerton 60--Andrea Thieme was one for 10 from the field and committed 10 of Cal State Fullerton’s 37 turnovers in 23 minutes. Jackie Bucher had 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Cal State Fullerton (10-13).

Dee Braxton had eight points, eight rebounds, and four steals and Kristen Sigg scored 15 for Cal State Fullerton before fouling out in the fourth quarter. The Titans were 25 for 63 from the field. The Titans outrebounded Cal Poly, 45-34.

UC Santa Barbara 83, UC Irvine 68--UC Irvine fell behind by 18 at the half after shooting only 31% from the floor. Sabrina Roberson scored 13 points and Leticia Oseguera had 11 for the Anteaters. Amy Smith scored 20 points and Kristi Rohr had 17 for UC Santa Barbara.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

Sonoma State 6, Southern California College 3--Serena Xie won in singles, 6-1, 6-1, and paired up with Amy Tate to win in doubles, 8-6, for Southern California College (5-2). Michelle Tamplin also won in singles, 6-4, 6-2, for SCC.

UC Irvine 7, Southern Utah 2--Liz Yim won in singles, 6-0, 6-0, and paired up with Kelly Foster to win in doubles, 8-2, for UC Irvine (3-1). Patty Villaroman also won in singles, 6-3, 7-5, for the Anteaters.
