Fresno State Tops Titans in Baseball

Fresno State scored two runs in the seventh inning and hung on to defeat Cal State Fullerton, 4-3, in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday at Beiden Field. The loss snapped the Titans’ six-game winning streak aginst the Bulldogs.

Aaron Rowand, one for four, hit a two-run bases-loaded single in the third inning to give Cal State Fullerton a 2-1 lead.

But Fresno State (6-10) took a 4-2 lead into the seventh inning on an RBI double by Josh Hannah and an RBI single by Derek Feramisco.

The Titans scored one run in the ninth inning when pinch-hitter Jojo Hernandez hit a double, scoring C.J. Ankrum, who was hit by a pitch. Hernandez was left stranded at third base when Bulldog pitcher Jeff Weaver struck out three in his first relief appearance.

Matt Wise (1-2) pitched 6 2/3 innings, striking out eight, walking one and giving up four earned runs for the Titans.

Brad Tucker (1-1) pitched seven innings, striking out and walking four, while giving up two earned runs for Fresno State.

In nonconference baseball:

Southern California College 7, Northwood 6--Kevin Moore tied the score in the ninth and Terrik Clark scored the winning run on a balk. SCC improves to 11-5.

In nonconference softball:

Concordia 5-6, UC San Diego 4-2--Ann Romero, who was two for four with two RBIs, drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning for Concordia (8-5). Carrie Shankles (2-3) pitched eight innings, allowing one earned run in the victory.

In the second game, every player had a hit for Concordia. The Eagles outhit UC San Diego (5-3, 13-4), and scored three runs in the first and fifth innings. Angie Feddersen drove in two runs and Cynthia Molleman was four for four for Concordia.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:

Long Beach State 3, Hawaii 1--Geoff Cyrst had 32 kills to lead Long Beach State, ranked 10th in the country, to a 15-12, 6-15, 15-6, 15-9 victory over seventh-ranked Hawaii at Long Beach. The victory avenged a three-game loss to the Rainbows earlier this season.

Cryst, who had 41 kills in the 49ers’ last match, also contributed a team-high nine digs. Gaby Amar had 18 kills, assisted on 10 blocks and served three aces for Long Beach (9-4, 4-4).

Sivan Leoni had 20 kills and Aaron Wilton contributed 18 kills, 10 digs and three aces for Hawaii (7-5, 5-4).
