Wolf, Pepperdine Strike Fear Into Dominguez Hills

In its first game against a non-Division I opponent, Pepperdine exploded for 17 hits and defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills, 12-1, Friday in Malibu.

All-American left-hander Randy Wolf (3-1) sailed, striking out a school-record 14, walking one and allowing five singles. The previous record of 13 strikeouts had been held by four pitchers, including Wolf, who reached the number twice last season.

Dominguez scored in the fourth, by which time the Waves led 5-0. Pepperdine (5-10) extended the lead by scoring one in the fifth, two in the sixth, three in the seventh and one in the eighth.

Chris Cosbey and Rob Reid, the first two batters in the Pepperdine order, each went three for five. Reid scored three runs and Cosbey scored once and drove in two runs.

Right-fielder Mark Lopez, a senior from Chatsworth High, hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning, his second homer of the season.

Lopez, David Matranga, Josh Oder and Steve Zorn each had two hits and Tyler Ferrer had a hit and scored twice.

Pepperdine, which opened with 14 games against quality Division I opponents, has won three of four.

Northwestern 5, Cal State Northridge 4--Call it a lost weekend in Las Vegas.

Northridge dropped its third game in two days, falling to previously winless Northwestern in the UNLV tournament.

The Matadors (13-7-1), ranked No. 19 in one poll, fell behind, 3-0, in the first and 4-2 after two innings. Northridge scored single runs in the fourth and fifth to tie the score, but Northwestern (1-4) scored one in the sixth against reliever Jesse Yeomans (1-1).

Brad Brasser (1-1) got stronger as the game progressed for Northwestern, striking out 13 and scattering nine hits. Brasser walked four and allowed only one extra-base hit, a double by freshman third baseman Jason Gause.

Cesar Martinez had three hits for Northridge. Gause had two, and also drove in two runs. Freshman first baseman Adrian Mendoza and junior shortstop Adam Kennedy each singled and drove in a run.

Left-hander Brian Downing, a junior transfer from Oxnard College, allowed four runs in 3 2/3 innings for Northridge, which lost to Clemson and UNLV on Thursday.

Cal Lutheran 23, Occidental 3--The Kingsmen continued to roll through Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition, blasting host Occidental behind a 22-hit attack.

Cal Lutheran (10-2), the defending SCIAC champion, is 7-0 in the conference.

Senior left-hander Richard Bell (4-0) allowed three runs in the first inning but clamped down, allowing no more runs through six innings. Bell, who struck out six and walked one, was relieved by Ramon Orozco in the seventh.

Mike Young hit a grand slam in the fourth to cap a five-run inning and give Cal Lutheran a 10-3 lead. The Kingsmen scored five more in the fifth and after scoring two in the seventh and one in the eighth, scored another five in the ninth.

Young drove in six runs. Designated hitter Brad Smith hit four doubles and drove in four runs. His replacement, Dave Ballon, hit two home runs. Marc Scorza and Scott Foli also homered.

It marked the second game in a row Cal Lutheran has scored 20 or more runs. The Kingsmen defeated Whittier, 20-4, last Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader.

Occidental fell to 3-11, 2-5 in SCIAC play.
