Poly Needs Overtime to Beat Simi Valley

Shea Anderson made a layup with 41 seconds to play in overtime that put eighth-ranked Long Beach Poly ahead to stay in a 59-54 victory over Simi Valley in Southern Section Division I-AA quarterfinal at Royal High.

Simi Valley’s Branduinn Fullove missed a three-pointer with eight seconds left in overtime and the long rebound went to Poly’s Malachi Edwards, who made two free throws with three seconds to play for the final margin.

Simi Valley (23-4) missed all four shots in overtime. Long Beach Poly improved to 25-4.

No. 1 North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake 81, Duarte 51--For the third consecutive season, the Wolverines (31-1) defeated Duarte (22-7) in the Division III-A semifinals at Azusa High.

Jason Collins had 28 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and five steals, and twin brother Jarron had 14 points, 15 rebounds and five assists for Harvard-Westlake.

No. 3 Compton Dominguez 101, Newbury Park 48--The Dons (23-5) jumped to a 26-19 first-quarter lead and then held Newbury Park (19-9) to three points in the second quarter en route to a Division II-A quarterfinal victory at Compton High.

Junior forward Jason Thomas finished with a game-high 29 points and added seven steals for Dominguez. Senior guard Kenny Brunner added 20 points and 10 assists.

No. 5 Artesia 85, Los Altos 49--Senior forward Joe Hall led all scorers with 21 points and also had 10 rebounds and four blocked shots as the Pioneers (28-2) romped in a Division II-A quarterfinals at Gahr High.

Jason Capono added 17 points, 11 rebound and 11 assists for Artesia.

Los Altos (19-8) was led by Derrell Powers with 16 points.

No. 7 Santa Monica Crossroads 77, L.A. Baptist 56--Senior guard Baron Davis led the Roadrunners (26-3) with 25 points, eight assists and eight steals, despite sitting out the entire second quarter because of two fouls in a Division IV-A semifinal at Hart High.

Crossroads opened the game on a 27-5 run, forced 17 first-half turnovers, and led, 39-16, at halftime.

L.A. Baptist fell to 24-3.

No. 14 Brea Olinda 89, San Bernardino 87--Baskets by Reid Carlson with 47 seconds remaining in overtime and Jason Skirvars with 17 seconds left lifted the Wildcats (26-3) over the Cardinals (13-15) in a Division II-A quarterfinal at San Gorgonio High.

Brea Olinda forced the overtime when Chris McMillan made a three-pointer with eight seconds to play.

Sean Wink led the Wildcats with 27 points.

No. 19 Antelope Valley 75, Newhall Hart 63--Despite being held scoreless most of the the fourth quarter, Le’Tre Kelly had 22 points, 13 rebounds and five rebounds to lead the Antelopes (23-6) in Division I-A quarterfinals at Lancaster High.

Kelly made key free throws and a layup late in the game to kill a Hart rally. The Indians finished 23-6.
