Monarch Girls to Host Tritons in I-A Tonight

In Southern Section girls’ basketball playoffs tonight, Esperanza will travel to Fontana High for a Division I-AA quarterfinal game. In a Division I-A quarterfinal, Mater Dei will host South Coast League rival San Clemente at 7:30 p.m.

Laguna Hills travels to Corona Centennial High to face Norco in a Division II-AA semifinal. In the Division II-A quarterfinals, Newport Harbor visits Brea Olinda and Ocean View plays at Compton Dominguez. Rosary hosts Torrance Bishop Montgomery at Servite High in a Division III-A semifinal.

In a Division IV-A semifinal, Brethren Christian plays Olympic League rival Cerritos Valley Christian in a semifinal game at Cerritos Gahr High. Capistrano Valley Christian hosts Palos Verdes Peninsula Chadwick in a Division V-AA quarterfinal.

Host sites for Tuesday’s semifinals of the Southern Section boys’ and girls’ soccer playoffs were announced Friday by the section office.

In the girls’ playoffs, Los Alamitos (22-4-3) will host Sea View League-rival Edison (16-9-2) in a Division I game. In Division II, Santa Margarita (17-1-3) will play at Ventura Buena (23-2-4), and in Division III, El Modena (18-7-2) will host North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake (17-4-1).

In the boys’ playoffs, Fountain Valley (19-4-2) will host Redlands (17-6-5) and Santa Ana (20-0-4) will host Simi Valley Royal (24-5-1) in Division I games. Top-seeded Mater Dei (22-1-3) will host Ventura Buena (17-3-5) in Division II, and Santa Margarita (15-7-4) will host Moorpark (21-5-1) in Division III. In Division IV, Laguna Beach (17-4-1) travels to Whittier Pioneer (14-6-3).

Vince Shinnefield of Mater Dei, The Times Orange County lineman of year, has decided to attend Fordham, Coach Bruce Rollinson said.

“I was thrilled,” said Shinnefield, 17. “I just love New York. I’m not sure what to expect, but I think Mater Dei prepared me for college football.”

A two-way player for the 14-0 Division I champions, Shinnefield did not allow a sack and his blocking graded out in the 90% level every week. On defense, Shinnefield made 22 lead tackles, seven assists, and had three sacks. He will play defense at Fordham, a Division I-AA program.

Shinnefield also was named to the Southern Section and All-CIF Division I first teams.

Carlos Briceno, a 1992 Olympic bronze medalist from Fountain Valley, was the No. 1 pick in Bud Light Pro Beach Volleyball League’s draft for the second consecutive year. Also drafted were Laguna Beach’s Scott Fortune, Huntington Beach’s Dan Hartman and Dusty Dvorak of Laguna Beach.

Kendra Browne, a goalie on the Mater Dei boys’ water polo team, has accepted a scholarship to play on the women’s team at USC, Coach Guy Souza said. Browne recorded 201 saves for Mater Dei, which finished the season 6-12.

Dave Berutich, linebacker at Laguna Hills, has agreed to attend Humboldt State, Coach Steve Bresnahan said.

The UC Irvine women’s soccer team has signed Kristie Nakamura, a midfielder from Thousand Oaks High, and Tammy Rosen, a sweeper from Agoura High, the university announced.

Nakamura was a first-team All-CIF player last season, and Rosen was an All-Marymount League selection. Both are members of the Olympic Development Program state team.

Mollie Flint, a Corona del Mar High graduate, has been selected to the women’s all-academic basketball team in the West Coast Conference. Flint, a senior majoring in accounting at St. Mary’s, has a 3.95 grade-point average.
