Weathers Leads Cypress to Victory in Softball

Aimee Weathers scored from second base on an error in the sixth inning, giving Cypress a 2-1 victory over Modesto in the Merced softball tournament Saturday.

Jaime Wilkes (8-1) pitched a complete game, striking out three and giving up one run on five hits for Cypress (19-1).

In earlier games, Cypress defeated Merced, 5-3, and Los Angeles Pierce, 10-1.

Michele Bailon has been Cypress’ biggest offensive threat, collecting seven hits and three runs batted in in nine at-bats over three games Saturday.

In Orange Empire Conference baseball:

Cypress 8, Fullerton 3--Craig Kuzmic had two hits, with a home run, a double and three RBIs for Cypress (16-3, 2-1). Junior Rodriguez had two hits, a home run and two RBIs. Curt Lee had three hits for Fullerton (0-4 in conference).

Rancho Santiago 15, Orange Coast 4--Kevin Duck went four for five with a home run, six RBIs and three runs scored to lead Rancho Santiago (15-1, 4-0), which scored four runs in the first inning. Rick Gonzalez went three for five with a home run and three RBIs. Orange Coast is 8-9, 1-2.

Saddleback 7, Riverside 4--Greg Ferrell had two hits and two RBIs for Saddleback (16-0, 4-0). Ryan Ruiz added a triple and a single and Kirk Bolling hit a double and a single for Saddleback. Pat Versluis (5-0) picked up his fifth victory for the Gauchos.

In the Saddleback women’s pentathlon:

Orange Coast places first and third--Sherry Panggabean of Orange Coast won the 50-meter breaststroke and placed second in the 50 freestyle in scoring a total of 144.5 points to win the women’s pentathlon. Panggabean also placed second in the 50 freestyle to finish third in the 50 backstroke and 100 individual medley.

Chintya Ganda of Orange Coast won the 50 butterfly, 50 backstroke and 100 individual medley, but with her poor showing in the 50 breaststroke, Ganda had to settle for third overall with 131 points.

Lisa Saena of Golden West finished second overall with 140.5 points. Saena won the 50 freestyle and placed third in the 50 butterfly. Saena’s lowest finish was eighth place in the 50 backstroke. She placed fourth in the 50 breaststroke and 100 individual medley.

In the Saddleback men’s pentathlon:

Golden West places four in top five--Felix Sutanto of Golden West won the 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley and scored a total of 150 points to win the men’s pentathlon. Felix Sutanto also placed second in the 100 breaststroke in taking third in the 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly.

Albert Sutanto placed second in four of the five events and scored 148 points to finish second overall for Golden West. Audy Oktavian won the 100 breaststroke and placed fourth overall; Erik Larson finished fifth for Golden West.

Wisnu Wardhana of Orange Coast won the 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle and scored 145 points to place third in the pentathlon.
