Etiwanda’s Big Finish Is Too Much for North

Etiwanda High outscored Riverside North by 11 points in the fourth quarter en route to a 74-68 upset victory in the semifinals of the Southern Section Division I-A basketball playoffs Tuesday night at A.B. Miller High.

The Eagles (24-5) took the lead for good with 45 seconds remaining when Jeremy Sargent scored on a dunk to put his team ahead, 70-68. He finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots.

Forward Rudy Simpson scored a game-high 20 points for Etiwanda, which will play Santa Ana Mater Dei for the I-A title Saturday night at the Pond of Anaheim. Etiwanda has never played in a final before.

Todd Ramasar scored a team-high 18 points for 12th-ranked North (23-5).

No. 2 Santa Ana Mater Dei 70, No. 19 Antelope Valley 49--Mike Vukovich led all scorers with 24 points and a season-high 20 rebounds for Mater Dei (29-2) in a I-A semifinal at Ocean View High.

The Monarchs advanced to a section final for the sixth consecutive time. Guard Kevin Augustine ignored a sore right shoulder and a stiff left knee and had 12 points, including several drives for baskets in the final quarter.

Antelope Valley center Le’Tre Kelly, who had 49 points and 27 rebounds in two playoff games last week, led the Antelopes (23-7) with 17 points.

No. 3 Compton Dominguez 73, No. 11 La Habra Sonora 44--Dominguez broke open a close game in the third quarter by outscoring Sonora, 22-7, to take control in a II-A semifinal at Compton College.

Tayshaun Prince scored 19 points and Jason Thomas added 14 for the Dons (24-5).

Ben Jones scored 14 to lead Sonora (26-4).

No. 5 Lakewood Artesia 66, No. 14 Brea Olinda 65--Top-seeded Artesia (29-2) survived after Brian Hills made two free throws with eight seconds remaining in a Division II-A semifinal at Valencia High.

Third-seeded Brea Olinda (26-4) missed a three-pointer and tip-in attempt at the buzzer. Sean Wink led the Wildcats with 30 points, including seven three-pointers.

Hills scored 16 for Artesia and sophomore Jason Kapono added 14 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Pasadena Poly 63, Van Nuys Montclair Prep 57--Forward Robert Reeder scored a game-high 25 points and had 11 rebounds for the top-seeded Panthers (26-0) in a Division V-AA semifinal at Occidental College.

David Poole scored 17 points for Poly, including five three-pointers.

Montclair Prep, the defending divisional champion, finished 20-7.

Pilgrim 74, Santa Maria Valley Christian 66--Guard Jeret Black scored a team-high 24 points for Pilgrim (17-6) in a Division V-A semifinal at Righetti High.

The Patriots advance to the finals for the first time. Top-seeded Valley Christian finished 17-9.

Pacific Hills 77, Rolling Hills Prep 74--Pacific Hills (21-8) went on an 8-0 run in the final 1:40 to clinch the Division V-A semifinal at Chadwick High.

Junior forward Conrad Adamczak scored the final four points for Bruins.
