Irvine Valley Women Upset in Basketball

Irvine Valley scored only 13 points in the first half and the Lasers were upset, 52-47, by Mt. San Antonio in the second round of the Southern California women’s basketball regionals.

Despite shooting 24% from the field in the first half, sixth-seeded Irvine Valley (23-6) scored the first 11 points of the second half to take a 26-25 lead. Heather Johnson hit a three-pointer with nine minutes 45 seconds left to put the Mounties up for good.

Alison Carr scored 16 points to lead Irvine Valley, which defeated the Mounties by 10 earlier in the season. Pamela Loud scored eight and had seven rebounds for the Lasers.

In Orange Empire Conference baseball:

Rancho Santiago 5, East Los Angeles 4 (10 innings)--Josh Reding stole home to score the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning on a double steal with two outs and runners at the corners. Kevin Burford went two for four, including a double, one run batted in and one run scored for Rancho Santiago (17-1-1).

Riverside 7, Cypress 4--Riverside rallied from a two-run deficit in the third inning, scoring four runs in the fourth for the victory. Cody Trask (4-0) went the distance for Riverside (17-2, 2-2). Scott Daeley had two hits and two RBIs for Cypress (16-4, 2-2).

Saddleback 6, Orange Coast 4 (11)--Kirk Bolling’s two-run single in the 11th scored Ryan Ruiz and Corrie Wilkie with the go-ahead runs. Saddleback (17-0, 5-0) tied the score in the top of the ninth on three walks and a dropped fly ball by Chris Ponchak. Bryan Moore went eight innings, giving up six hits and three runs for the Pirates (8-10, 2-2).

In Orange Empire Conference softball:

Fullerton 2, Rancho Santiago 0--Fullerton’s Lindsay Huebner and Kristy Bonwell combined to shut out Rancho Santiago on five hits. The Dons (10-6, 1-2) had runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Fullerton (13-6, 3-0) turned a double play to end the game.
