Perales Hangs In, Gives Santa Ana Valley Baseball Victory

Ruben Perales fouled off six pitches before he drove in the winning run from third with a two-out single to right-center to give Santa Ana Valley a 5-4 victory over Newport Harbor Friday in the first round of a Loara tournament baseball game.

Sammy Macias, who scored the winning run for Santa Ana Valley (1-0), was hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced to third on an out.

Joe Urban hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning, to tie the score, 4-4, for Newport Harbor (0-1).

In other Loara tournament games:

Cypress 8, Sunny Hills 4--Matt Gay went two for three with three RBIs and two runs scored for Cypress (1-0). Phil Seibel (1-0) pitched five innings, giving up four runs on four hits with eight strikeouts and six walks for Cypress.

Loara 20, Santiago 2--Ryan Banes went three for five with a double and two RBIs to lead Loara (1-0), which had 18 hits. Carlos Ortiz (1-0) pitched five innings, struck out five and gave up four hits for the Saxons.

In the Newport Elks tournament:

Capistrano Valley 2, Lakewood Artesia 1--Nick Murphy’s fourth-inning double scored Wes Brown and secured the victory for Capistrano Valley (1-0). Rik Currier had a solo home run in the first inning for the Cougars.

Orange 8, Saddleback 7--Chance Perry scored the winning run on James Starr’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning for Orange. The Panthers (1-0) scored six runs in the seventh inning.

In the North Orange County tournament:

Valencia 11, Riverside Notre Dame 10--Richard Martinez and Jason Annis scored the tying and go-ahead runs on Luke Spathes’ two-out single that capped a six-run sixth inning for Valencia (1-0).

Martinez and David Towery each had three hits and two RBIs for the Tigers. Teammate Matt Randolph had two hits and an RBI.
