Crenshaw Breezes, 80-57; Long Beach Poly Is Upset

Marcus Hadley scored 14 points to lead four players in double figures and the defending State Division I champion Crenshaw High defeated Etiwanda, 80-57, in a Southern Regional Division I first-round game Tuesday night before 2,000 fans at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Alastair Faux, who will sign with Minnesota, scored all 13 of his points in the first half as the Cougars (25-3) build a 48-25 halftime lead. Anthony Garrison, one of the nation’s top junior prospects, had 11 points.

Jeremy Sargent scored 16 points to lead Etiwanda (24-7).

Clovis West 57, Long Beach Poly 55--Clovis West (25-6) pulled off a Division I upset despite trailing 29-21 at halftime.

Ricky Anderson had 12 points, Leland Matthews added 10 and Malachi Edmond 10 to lead the Jackrabbits (27-5).

Clovis West, which won the Central Section Division I title, was led by Lester Williams with 12 points.

Irvine Woodbridge 66, Bakersfield South 51--The Warriors (28-3) won their 20th consecutive game and 21st in a row at home in a Division II game. South, the Central section runner-up, ended its season at 22-8.

Woodbridge’s senior trio of Brandon Beeson (20 points), William Stovall (18) and Chris Burgess (17), were the difference, especially in the second half.

Compton Dominguez 91, San Diego Scripps Ranch 69--The Dons used a man-to-man pressure defense the whole game and never trailed in a Division II game at Compton College.

Dominguez point guard Kenny Brunner had 18 points, 10 assists and six rebounds. Junior forward Tayshaun Prince had 19 points, eight rebounds and two assists.

Bakersfield Highland 63, Artesia 56--The Highland Scots (28-4) held Artesia to two field goals in the fourth quarter while scoring 18 points to outlast the Pioneers in a Division II at Highland at Bakersfield.

Shawn Daniels led all scorers with 25 points and Jason Armstrong scored 15 points. Artesia (29-4) was led by Jason Kapono and Joe Hall, who each scored 18 points.

North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake 75, San Diego Augustine 46--Defending State Division III champion Harvard-Westlake (32-1) were again led by Stanford-bound 6-10 twins Jarron and Jason Collins at home.

Jarron Collins had 23 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks and Jason Collins had 20 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.

The Wolverines (32-1), ranked No. 5 nationally by USA Today, will play host to either Tehachapi or Cathedral City in a second-round game Thursday.

Santa Fe Springs St. Paul 49, Corcoran 47--Nick Padilla scored the winning basket with nine seconds to play to give the Swordsmen (18-13) a win in a Division IV game at La Mirada High.

Dondy Cosby scored 15 points for St. Paul and Padilla had eight. Corcoran (26-5) was led by Luther Coleman with 15 points and Matt Burns with 13.

Bakersfield Garces 94, Twentynine Palms 53--Mike Nieto scored 32 points and had six assists and Don Bynum had 20 points to lead Garces to an easy Division IV victory at Garces High in Bakersfield.

Garces (23-6) made eight three-point baskets in the first quarter to jump out to a 34-9 lead. Nieto made five three-point shots in the first quarter.

Twentynine Palms (18-12) was led by Antwaine Clark, who scored 26 points.

Santa Fe Christian 53, Oxnard Santa Clara 48--In the biggest upset of the first round, Dean Vescera scored 16, Josh Washington had 12 and Jacob Washington 11 to lead Santa Fe Christian (17-12) in a Division V game at Santa Clara.

Pacific Hills 73, Reedley Immanuel 47--Conrad Adamczak scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Pacific Hills (23-8) over Reedley Immanuel (17-11) in a Division V game at Brentwood High.

Pasadena Poly 56, Fresno Christian 48--David Poole scored 21 points, and Robert Reeder had 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead Pasadena Poly (28-1) in a Division V game at Fresno Pacific College.
