Monarchs Reign With Difficulty Over Purdue

Top-seeded Old Dominion avoided a huge upset Sunday when Mery Andrade scored five points in overtime to give the Monarchs a 69-65 victory over Purdue in the second round of the NCAA Mideast Regional at Norfolk, Va.

Clarisse Machanguana led Old Dominion (31-1) with 23 points and 11 rebounds.

Louisiana Tech 74, Auburn 48--In Ruston, La., Tamicha Jackson scored 26 points and made six three-point baskets, and Louisiana Tech (31-3) beat Auburn for their 34th consecutive win at home.

The Techsters were making their fifth second-round appearance in a row and 14th in the last 16 years.

Georgia 80, Arizona 74--Kedra Holland-Corn made one free throw and Signe Antvorskov added two more in the closing seconds to preserve Georgia’s (24-5) victory at Athens, Ga.

The Bulldogs, who nearly blew a late 18-point lead, held off Arizona’s late rally with a 20-point effort from Holland-Corn.

Virginia 65, Utah 46--Lisa Hosac scored 13 points, and the Cavaliers (23-7) advanced to the round of 16 for the 11th year in a row with a win at Charlottesville, Va.

DeMya Walker added 12 points for the Cavaliers. Virginia held Utah to 17-of-57 shooting.

North Carolina 81, Michigan State 71--Chanel Wright hit a 25-foot shot at the end of regulation to force overtime, and Tracy Reid scored nine points in the extra period as top-seeded North Carolina rallied from 10 points behind to win at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Alabama 61, St. Joseph’s 52--Yolanda Watkins scored 20 points as Alabama (25-6) won at Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Late in the game, the Crinmson Tide turned basketball into a frustrating game of keepaway over a three-minute stretch that broke St. Joseph’s spirit and put Alabama into its fourth round of 16 in a row.

MIDWEST

Colorado 66, Stephen F. Austin 57--LaShena Graham scored 24 points, and the Buffaloes made eight consecutive free throws down the stretch to win at Boulder Colo.

Raegan Scott added 10 points and 13 rebounds for the second-seeded Buffaloes (23-8), who overcame 21 turnovers to advance to the round of 16 for the fourth time in five years.
