A woman and her 6-year-old son narrowly escaped serious injury after she tried, unsuccessfully, to put out a house fire with a garden hose, Fire Department officials said.

Twenty firefighters were sent to her single-story, single-family home in the 1200 block of Warren Street at 10:38 Monday morning to put out a fire in a bedroom. The Los Angeles Fire Department extinguished the blaze in 14 minutes and department spokesman Brian Humphrey estimated the damage at $20,000.

The 26-year-old woman and her son were transported to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, where they were treated for minor smoke inhalation and listed in good condition.

Humphrey said he did not know exactly how long the woman fought the fire before calling the Fire Department, but he chided her for not calling at once.

“Actions such as hers often lead to serious injury and even death,” he said. “The drill is simple when there is a fire: Get out, stay out and call 911 from the neighbors’ house.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Humphrey said.
