Trio Propels Palmdale Girls to First Place at Invitational

Tranisha Holmes, Carolina Giesseler and Edniesha Curry led the Palmdale High girls’ track and field team to victory in the Herb Wyre Invitational at Palmdale High on Saturday.

The Falcons totaled 96 points to edge Quartz Hill (90) and Littlerock (76) in the six-team meet.

Holmes ran opening 220-yard legs of 24.1 seconds and 24.2 on Palmdale’s victorious sprint medley and 8 x 220 relay teams.

Curry won the triple jump at 35 feet 7 1/4 inches, placed third in the long jump at 16-1 and ran legs on the Falcons’ 8 x 220 and 440 relay teams.

Giesseler won the pole vault at 10 feet and ran legs on Palmdale’s 8 x 220, sprint medley and second-place mile relay teams.

Kenya Corley of Quartz Hill, the defending Southern Section Division I champion in the long jump, won the event with a season best of 18-10 3/4.

Teammate Michelle Perry was second at 17-2 1/2.

Matt Leonard paced Palmdale to victory in the boys’ meet by winning the shotput at 45-10 1/2 and the discus at 135-4.

Palmdale totaled 106 points with Paraclete (86) and Littlerock (82) rounding out the top three.

Leonard’s marks helped Palmdale win both events in the meet, in which every competition was in relay format.

His marks were combined with those of three other teammates for Palmdale’s winning total distances of 124-1 in the shot put and 340-9 3/4 in the discus throw.

Stanford Invitational--Andrea Neipp of Highland ran a career best of 9:46.20 in the girls’ 3,200 meters to finish second behind Santa Rosa’s Julia Stamps (9:40.03).

The Stanford-bound Stamps, who won her third consecutive state Division I cross-country title in November, had a lead of three to four seconds over state Division II champion Neipp for much of the race before pulling away in the final 500 meters.

Neipp, who has committed to Brigham Young, moved to seventh on the all-time region list with her performance.
