Singles Key for Sunny Hills

Chris Chung lost only two games and Sunny Hills dropped two sets as the fourth-ranked Lancers dominated singles play in their 12-6 victory over No. 10 Garden Grove in a nonleague boys’ tennis match Wednesday at Garden Grove.

Sunny Hills (2-2) also showed its improved doubles play against the Argonauts by winning five of nine sets, including a 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 sweep by Raj Vyas and Tuji Chang.

Garden Grove (7-2) played without its second-best singles player, Tuan Nguyen, who injured a tendon in his leg.

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

Esperanza 13, Canyon 5--Thomas Lloyd improved to 23-1 this season with a 6-0, 6-1, 6-1 sweep for Esperanza (4-4). Brandon Vazarian also swept his sets, 6-0, 7-5, 6-2, for the Aztecs.

Foothill 11, Newport Harbor 7--Kevin Dowdell and Jason McAlister swept in doubles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-1, for Foothill (5-5). Ryan Katzman and Nich Mucha also swept, 7-5, 6-4, 6-1, and Andy Fischel and Brina Higby finished, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4, for the Knights. Newport Harbor is 3-5.

Long Beach Millikan 11, El Modena 7--Peter Feovenessy swept in singles for El Modena, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. Feovenessy improves to 23-1 on the year for the Vanguards.

Orange 13, Santa Ana 5--Heriberto Memije kept the match close for Santa Ana, sweeping his singles sets, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2.

Santa Margarita 12, Mission Viejo 6--Santa Margarita’s Garrick Gaffney and Andy Larson won their tiebreaker with Brent Shoji and Ali Nourbakhsh, 7-4, to complete a sweep in doubles, 6-2, 6-3, 7-6.

Conor Friedersdorf and Michael Hsu won two of three sets in doubles for the third-ranked Eagles (10-0).

Eric Bachelor won his three singles sets, 6-3, 6-3, 6-0, and Shoji and Nourbakhsh won two of three doubles sets for the Diablos.

University 10, Irvine 8--Jonny Biorkman swept his sets at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, to lead sixth-ranked University (5-2). Irvine is 7-3.

Woodbridge 20, Los Alamitos 4--Adam Artunian and Reza Farokhpay swept their sets, losing only two games in singles for top-ranked Woodbridge (8-0). Artunian swept, 6-0, 6-1, and Farokhpay swept, 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles, Artunian and Greg Levy defeated their opponent, 6-2, 6-2. Levy also swept in singles, 6-1, 6-1. Farokhpay and Amir Bagherpour won, 6-2, and Bagherpour swept in singles, 6-2, 7-6.
