Eighth Is Enough for Oxnard to Win, 6-5

Melina Mejia hit a solo home run with two out in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Oxnard High a 6-5 victory over Hueneme in a Channel League softball game Friday at Oxnard.

Hueneme led, 3-0, after 3 1/2 innings, but the Yellowjackets (4-2, 2-1 in league play) fought back to tie the score, 5-5, in the fifth.

Mejia had two of the Yellowjackets’ three hits and drove in two runs.

Anissa Velasquez (4-2) pitched a five-hitter and struck out nine for Oxnard.

Yajaida Bautista hit a three-run home run in the first inning and Jerusha Hiner added a solo home run in the fifth for the Vikings (3-6, 0-3).

Dos Pueblos 1, Rio Mesa 0--Two errors by the Spartans (6-1, 2-1) in the eighth inning allowed the winning run to score with two out in a Channel League game at Rio Mesa.

Rio Mesa turned two double plays for pitcher Marcella Ramirez (4-1), but left eight runners on base.

Ramirez pitched a seven-hitter, struck out four and walked one.

La Canada 4, South Pasadena 3--Ty Peterson singled home Lauren Herman with none out in the eighth for the Spartans (7-5, 3-0) in a Rio Hondo League game at La Canada.

Herman, who scored twice and had an RBI, doubled to start the inning.

Peterson had two hits and two RBIs and Stephanie Tenerelli added two hits and scored a run.

Freshman Kristin Senac (2-1) picked up the victory for La Canada in relief of Diane Abeles.
