Dodger update--Ramon Martinez is riding a seven-game winning streak--three shy of his career high. Martinez, 44-20 the last three seasons, is starting for the fourth time on opening day. He is 2-1 with a 4.91 earned-run average in his previous opening-day starts. Martinez has struggled overall against the Phillies, going 6-8 with a 4.10 ERA. He can be glad Jim Eisenreich no longer is playing for the Phillies. Eisenreich has the highest batting average of any opposing hitter against Martinez--.444 with a .500 on-base percentage and .667 slugging percentage.
Phillie update--The season hasn’t even started and the Phillies are already trying to survive. They have six players on the disabled list, including three-fifths of their starting rotation--Mark Portugal, Mike Grace and Tyler Green. If there’s anyone who can give the Phillies a glimmer of hope, it is opening-day starter Curt Schilling. He pitches better at Dodger Stadium than at any other ballpark in the National League, with a 2.13 ERA to go with a 1-1 record. Keep an eye on third baseman Scott Rolen, who many believe is the leading candidate for the rookie-of-the-year award. Rolen took away Todd Zeile’s starting third-base job in August last season but suffered a broken right arm when he was hit by a pitch. He finished the season with 130 at-bats--the maximum allowed to preserve his rookie status. Right fielder Danny Tartabull will be making his National League debut today.
Pitching matchups--The Dodgers’ Ramon Martinez (15-6 last season) vs. Curt Schilling (9-10 last season) today; Hideo Nomo (16-11) vs. Calvin Maduro (0-1) Wednesday at 7:30; Ismael Valdes (15-7) vs. Mark Leiter (8-12) Thursday at 7.
