There’s Nothing Super About This Packer
It was hard to figure Larry Stewart’s praise [April 1] of Billy Packer, who had just subjected us to 2 1/2 hours of highly opinionated, banal, often contradictory, incessant babbling in the NCAA championship game. Packer added nothing to the game but noise, emphasizing the obvious and generally insulting the intelligence of those who know anything about basketball.
But we should credit Stewart with being right about one thing: Packer is the John Madden of basketball. These two overbearing blowhards are insufferable. Only Tim McCarver closely rivals them, although as soon as he learns a little more than everything, Bill Walton will be right up there.
