Tokarse Leads Way for Titans

Brian Tokarse pitched a four-hit shutout as Cal State Fullerton defeated Cal State Sacramento, 4-0, in a Big West Conference baseball game Saturday at Hornet Field in Sacramento.

Tokarse posted his eighth win of the season without a loss as the Titans improved to 22-14, 10-4 in conference.

Aaron Rowand had two doubles and a run batted in and Pete Fukuhara had three hits and an RBI for the Titans, who trail Long Beach State (22-14, 13-1) by three games in the South Division of the Big West.

In another Big West game:

Long Beach State 11, Pacific 1--Marcus Jones (Esperanza) pitched eight innings, giving up one run on nine hits and striking out nine for Long Beach State (22-13, 13-1). The victory was the 12th straight in conference for the 49ers, who stay three games up on the Titans.

Jones (6-3, 4-1) has struck out 38 and walked one in his last 25 innings.

Casey Martin hit a three-run home run in the sixth, his fourth, and Steve Doherty added a solo home run in the ninth, his third, for the 49ers.

In the men’s Big West Challenge Cup track and field meet:

Long Beach State 191.5, UC Irvine 151, UC Santa Barbara 142, Cal State Fullerton 140.5--Robert Fritchel won the 800 and 1,500 for UC Irvine. Obi Obadike won the 100 with a time of 10.79 seconds for Cal State Fullerton.

In the women’s Big West Challenge Cup:

UC Irvine 184, UC Santa Barbara 160, Long Beach State 148, Cal State Fullerton 106--Popi Edwards won the 100 (11.91) and 200 (24.97) for UC Irvine. Kirran Moss won the discus with a throw of 142 feet 3 inches, and the hammer throw (155-4) for Long Beach State.

In Big West Conference softball:

Long Beach State 3, Cal State Northridge 1--Tammy Dietrich gave up one run on five hits for Long Beach State (28-13-1) in the second game of the doubleheader.

The 49ers scored in the first, third, and fourth innings to help Dietrich (15-7) post her second win of the weekend.

In the first game, Cal State Northridge (20-13-2) put together a two-out, two-run rally in the sixth to defeat Long Beach State, 2-0. Tara Glaister (12-8) struck out nine 49ers and scattered five hits.

In the Golden State Athletic Conference:

Southern California College 10, Cal Lutheran 7--Jennifer Miskov was two for three with two RBIs and Rachel Carver was one for three with two RBIs and a run for SCC (10-26-1).

In the first game of the doubleheader, Heather Rogers and Michelle Murie were two for four with a run scored in a 4-1 victory for SCC.

In the UC San Diego Power Bar Classic:

Chapman 6, Azusa Pacific 1--Stephanie Carew, daughter of baseball Hall of Famer Rod Crew, was named the tournament MVP.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:

Cal State Northridge 3, Long Beach State 0--Jason Hughes had 19 kills to lead Cal State Northridge (14-11, 8-9), which won, 15-7, 15-7, 15-6. Gaby Amar had 15 kills for Long Beach State (17-9, 10-7).
