Chris Gomez’s RBI single with two outs in the 10th inning gave the Padres a 3-2 victory Monday night over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

San Diego blew two chances to win it in the ninth inning before finally putting the Pirates away in the 10th.

With one out in the 10th, Matt Ruebel (1-1) walked Greg Vaughn, who took second on Wally Joyner’s single to shallow left-center. Gomez then bounced his game-winning single through the hole into left.

Dario Veras worked the 10th for the victory. The Padres took a 2-1 lead into the ninth before Trevor Hoffman, attempting to close out his 100th career save, allowed the Pirates to tie it with three consecutive singles.

Jermaine Allensworth doubled high off the left-field fence, and took third on Al Martin’s single. Mark Johnson followed with a single to tie it 2-2.

San Diego loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Steve Finley was thrown out to end the inning after trying a two-out drag bunt.

Finley’s double with one-out in the eighth scored Tony Gwynn to put the Padres ahead 2-1.

San Diego starter Andy Ashby, faced only one batter over the minimum through seven innings. He allowed three hits and one run in eight innings, with six strikeouts and two walks.
