Mike Penberthy of The Master’s College, a two-time NAIA Division I All-American basketball player, is one of 10 college seniors who has earned an invitation to participate in an NBA pre-draft camp in Phoenix, beginning Monday.

Penberthy, who averaged 27.5 points a game for the Mustangs this season, was invited to the 36-player camp based on his performance in a scouting camp in Portsmouth, Va., last week.

Although the 6-foot-3 Penberthy is best known for his outside-shooting abilities, he had 22 assists and just five turnovers in three games at point guard in Portsmouth. He had 12 points, eight assists and five steals in the camp title game.

“It was interesting playing point guard again,” Penberthy said, “because I haven’t played it much in two years.”

Hawaiian punch: The Pepperdine men’s volleyball team has tabbed one of the top recruits in the nation, outside hitter Scott Wong.

The 6-6 Wong led Punahou High in Honolulu to the Hawaii state championship and chose the Waves over UCLA, USC, UC Santa Barbara and Hawaii. Wong will compete for departing senior Kevin Barnett’s spot.

Taking the Metro: Former Cal Lutheran men’s basketball Coach Mike Dunlap has been named coach at Metro State in Denver, an NCAA Division II school.

Dunlap led the Kingsmen to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles in 1992, 1993 and 1994. He has been coaching professional basketball in Australia the past three years.

Dunlap replaces Charles Bradley, who was named coach at Loyola Marymount last month.

Hail to the champs: The state-champion Ventura College women’s basketball team will be honored at an awards presentation and dinner by Women Involved in Sports Evolution on April 18 at the Pierpont Inn in Ventura.
