Council Moves Closer to Buying ‘Bark Park’

LAGUNA BEACH — Moving a giant step closer to purchasing the “bark park” in Laguna Canyon, the City Council this week unanimously endorsed the plan.
City officials have been negotiating with representatives for GTE, the landowner, and had agreed to a $325,000 price for the 8.4-acre parcel, which is mostly hillside but includes the fenced park in which dogs may run free.
The city plans to use state and federal grants to help buy the land.
A representative for the landowner who was on hand for the meeting Tuesday night said he expects company officials to approve the purchase, the final step in the process.
“I have no reason to think that, at this point, the proposal would not be accepted,” Lou Banas said.
City Manager Kenneth C. Frank, who recommended the purchase, said the popular dog park is more likely to stay open if the city owns the land than if GTE sells it to someone else.
