At last, equal opportunity for boozing golfers.

A bill passed Thursday by the California Assembly would let public golf courses sell liquor from an unlimited number of roving golf carts. A law that took effect this year allows only private golf courses to do so.

The bill by Assemblyman Jim Battin (R-La Quinta) was sent to the Senate by a 54-17 vote.

Department of Alcohol Beverage Control regulations now allow public courses to have two liquor-selling golf carts for an 18-hole course.

The bill would let public golf courses have an unlimited number of roving golf carts selling liquor.

Assemblyman Don Perata (D-Alameda) questioned whether golfers should have that many chances to buy liquor.

“Once these golfers finish four hours of golf, eventually they’re going to get into their vehicles and drive away,” he said.

But Assemblyman Dick Ackerman (R-Fullerton) said he was speaking for not-so-proficient golfers.

“Sometimes we need alcoholic beverages,” he said.
