CS Fullerton Offense Does Job in 11-2 Win

Steve Chatham had four hits, including a three-run homer, to back the three-hit pitching of Matt Wise and Mike Garner as Cal State Fullerton defeated visiting New Mexico State, 11-2, Friday in Big West Conference baseball.

Wise went six innings, giving up three hits and two runs. He walked four and struck out nine to improve his record to 3-6. Joel Sanchez, the first of three pitchers for New Mexico State, took the loss.

The Titans broke a scoreless tie with a five-run third inning. C.J. Ankrum’s bases-loaded sacrifice fly produced the first run and Chatham followed with a line drive over the left-field fence for his second home run of the year.

Ankrum later had another sacrifice fly and singled in a run to extend his hitting streak to 21 consecutive games. Cal State Fullerton improves to 24-19-1, 12-7. New Mexico State is 16-25, 5-14.

In nonconference baseball:

Chapman 2, Menlo 1--Cale Shepherd scored on Menlo first baseman Kevin August’s throwing error in the top of the ninth innings. Shepherd walked to reach base earlier in the inning.

Justin Miner pitched eight innings scattering four hits and walking six to improve to 5-3. Shepherd had two hits for the Panthers (21-10).

Cody Sheesley pitched a five-hitter for Menlo (20-20-1).

In Big West Conference softball:

New Mexico State 4-2, Cal State Fullerton 0-0--The first-place Roadrunners (26-15, 15-7) held visiting Fullerton (22-20, 8-13) scoreless in the conference doubleheader.

Jana Oetgen gave up only one earned run on four hits in the first game for the Titans to pick up the loss. Second baseman Nikki Hart cost the second game with a fifth inning error.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 6, San Diego State 3--Freshman Nick Varvais won his eighth consecutive singles victory to lead UC Irvine (10-8).
