Mission’s Delgado Has 2 Homers, 9 RBIs

Designated hitter Jerry Delgado hit a grand slam, a three-run home run and a two-run single for Mission College, which surprised Canyons, 19-9, on Saturday in a Western State Conference baseball game at Valencia.

Kirk Romo drove in three runs with four hits for the Free Spirit (17-19, 9-11 in conference play), while Jesse Daggett drove in three runs with four hits--including two home runs--for the Cougars (26-12, 13-7).

Glendale 17, Pierce 10--Philip Sheldon-Guide went five for six, driving in three runs and scoring three, and the Vaqueros (25-11, 14-6) took sole possession of the WSC lead at Glendale.

Jared Sandler had three hits for Glendale, including a three-run home run, and Darin Reisman added a three-run home run and a double.

Valley 5, Bakersfield 1--Ruben Lopez (3-4) allowed one earned run in seven innings, and the Monarchs knocked the Renegades (25-15, 13-7) out of a three-way tie for the WSC lead at Valley.

Lopez scattered five hits while striking out four and walking three for Valley (7-27-3, 6-14).

Dylan Forman had two hits and drove in a run for Valley, and Mike Wertz had a two-run single in the first inning.

Moorpark 6, Santa Barbara 4--Brandon Michaels drove in two runs with a pair of doubles and Pat Rizzotti had three hits, including two doubles, for the Raiders (12-23, 7-12) in a WSC game at Moorpark.

Santa Barbara is 13-19, 5-14.

Oxnard 11, Ventura 4--Matt Buttell drove in four runs with four hits, including a two-run triple, for the Yellowjackets (17-16, 10-9) in a WSC game at Oxnard.

Brent Egan added three hits for Oxnard, including a run-scoring triple, and Jack Wilson had three hits, including a double and a run-scoring single.

Cal State Northridge 28, San Francisco 3--The Matadors (33-17-1) had 23 hits, only two of them coming in an eight-run first inning, in a nonconference game at San Francisco.

USF starter Sean Buller walked six, hit two and could retire only one batter before he was replaced in the first.

Northridge built a 20-0 lead with the help of four home runs. Adam Kennedy hit his 22nd, Jose Miranda hit his 20th, Jeremy Sickles hit his second and Brian Wagner hit his eighth.

Sickles had five RBIs.

Benito Flores (10-3) allowed one run and three hits in five innings to earn his sixth victory in his last eight starts.

The Master’s 3-5, Concordia 2-2--The Mustangs swept a nonconference doubleheader on the strong pitching of Ruben Escobar and Eric Fuller at Newhall.

Escobar scattered eight hits, struck out 13 and gave up two runs in 10 innings for the Mustangs (21-24) in the first game.

TENNIS

Cal Lutheran 6, Caltech 3--Singles victories by No. 2 Alia Gustafson, No. 3 Cindy Bear, No. 4 Heather Szabo and No. 6 Jennifer Otto helped the Regals finish fifth in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament at Cal Lutheran.

Cal Lutheran 5, Pomona-Pitzer 4--No. 1 Mark Ellis and No. 2 Jenia Karimov yielded only four singles games, and won at No. 1 doubles as the Kingsmen finished third in the SCIAC at Caltech.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Stanford d. Pepperdine, 15-13, 15-9, 15-13--Matt Fuerbringer had 23 kills for No. 3-ranked Stanford in the opening round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation playoffs at Palo Alto.

Pepperdine (18-9) rallied from a 12-6 deficit in the third game to pull even at 12-12.
