Mayor Frank Fry Jr. was seriously injured Sunday afternoon when he lost control of his car and crashed into a tree in Garden Grove, authorities said.

Fry, 71, was driving down Trask Avenue near Jackson Street in his 1985 Chevrolet Caprice when he veered off the street and knocked over a tree and a sign before crashing into a second tree, Garden Grove Police Capt. Dave Abrecht said.

“There is some witness statement that they heard a popping sound,” Abrecht said. “One of the things we’re looking at is a possible malfunction of the vehicle, a blowout, something like that.”

Fry was in serious but stable condition with a fractured hip and other injuries late Monday at UCI Medical Center in Orange. No one else was hurt.

Mayor Pro Tem Margie L. Rice will preside over city business in Fry’s absence. The next City Council meeting is today at 7 p.m.

“We’re all praying for him and certainly wishing him Godspeed to get him back to work and get him well and back to his family,” Rice said.

Get-well cards can be sent to City Hall, 8200 Westminster Ave., CA 92683.
