Infant Rescued From Backyard Hot Tub

A Ventura woman who was in the hospital recovering from giving birth to a baby almost lost her 11-month-old son when the boy fell into an outdoor spa on Tuesday afternoon and nearly drowned.

Joey Thompson was found floating in the hot tub in the backyard of his family’s home on Martin Court by two aunts about 1:20 p.m., police said. The women, Joann Martinez and Tara Johnson, both residents of the house, pulled Joey out of the water, started CPR and called paramedics.

The boy, who police said spent about 30 seconds under water, had a heartbeat and was breathing on his own after the rescue. Paramedics took the child to Ventura County Medical Center, where his mother, Christine Martinez, was in the maternity unit. Joey Martinez was listed in serious condition in the intensive care unit, hospital officials said.
