Cal State Fullerton Defeats No. 24 Nevada in Baseball, 5-2

Matt Wise and Mike Greenlee combined for an eight-hitter Friday as Cal State Fullerton defeated 24th-ranked Nevada, 5-2, in the opening game of a Big West Conference three-game series in Reno.

Wise gave up eight hits over seven innings and struck out nine for his fourth victory of the season.

Greenlee pitched two perfect innings for his fifth save.

Pete Fukuhara had three hits for the Titans (27-19-1, 15-7). Steve Chatham, Mike Lamb and Jerome Alviso each had two hits for Fullerton. Lamb also had two RBIs.

Gary Johnson and Andy Dominique each had two hits for the Wolf Pack (31-14, 15-7), who still lead the Big West Northern Division by at least 6 1/2 games.

In another Big West baseball game:

Long Beach State 6, New Mexico State 3--Rocky Biddle (8-4) gave up three runs on nine hits in seven innings, striking out 13, for 16th-ranked Long Beach State (28-18, 18-4).

The 49ers scored a run in the eighth to break a 3-3 tie and added two in the ninth.

At the Big West women’s tennis championships:

Long Beach State 5, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 2--Long Beach State’s Jing Chen defeated Karon Apra, 6-2, 6-0, and the second-seeded 49ers advanced to the semifinals where they will play sixth-seeded Idaho, a 5-4 winner over New Mexico State.

Cal State Fullerton 5, UC Irvine 1--Titan Debbie Vonusa defeated Liz Yim, 6-4, 6-2, in a consolation victory for Fullerton. Mai Nguyen won the only singles match for UC Irvine, defeating Alexandra Arrodondo, 7-6, 6-3.
