Cal State Fullerton Rallies to Defeat Nevada in Baseball

Aaron Rowand singled in Scott Seals from third to break a tie in the eighth as the Cal State Fullerton baseball team went on to defeat 24th-ranked Nevada, 14-10, in the second of a Big West Conference three-game series in Reno.

Seals reached base on an error to lead off the seventh. C.J. Ankrum singled Seals to second, Ankrum advanced to second and Seals to third on a ground out to third. Rowand singled, scoring Seals to put Fullerton (28-19-1, 16-7) on top for good, 11-10. The Titans added two more runs in the inning and one more in the eighth.

Ryan Owens had a run-scoring single and Nakia Hill homered with three on in the top of second to give Fullerton an early 4-1 advantage, but Nevada (31-15, 15-8) came back with four in the bottom of the inning, retaking the lead, 5-4.

Nevada added two runs in the fourth and fifth, but the Titans came back with four in the top of the sixth, capped by Owens’ two-run double, to close within one run, 9-8.

The Wolf Pack added a run in bottom of the sixth, but Jojo Hernandez singled in two runs with two outs in the seventh for Fullerton to even the score, 10-10.

In nonconference baseball:

UC San Diego 9, Chapman 3--Ryan Hill, Mark Mason and Eric Pangelinan each had two hits in a nonconference victory for UC San Diego (16-16).

Luis Garcia had three hits for Chapman (23-12). Rob O’Brien and Michael Konkol each had two hits for the Panthers.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Azusa Pacific 4-2, Southern California College 1-3--Gretchen Brandt gave up seven hits and recorded 12 strikeouts in 10 innings to earn the win for Southern California College (19-31-1, 7-9) in the second game of the doubleheader. In the first game, Jen McNatt had a double, a triple and three RBIs to lead Azusa Pacific (46-6-1, 14-1).

In nonconference softball:

CS Fullerton 4-5, Nevada Las Vegas 0-2--Jana Oetgen pitched a two-hit shutout in the first game of a doubleheader for Fullerton (26-20). Nikki Hart, Wendi Griffin and Bevan Trueblood each had two hits for the Titans.

Donna Coombes scattered eight hits over seven innings in the second game to complete the sweep for the Titans. Dara Marzolo had three hits in the second game for the Titans.

At the U.S. Intercollegiate golf tournament:

UC Irvine finishes 18th--UC Irvine freshman Andrew Wen finished with a 54-hole total of 217, four-over par, and finished tied for 17th. UC Irvine finished 18th.

USC finished with a team total of one under-par to win the tournament.

Stanford’s Joe Kribel shot a five-under-par 66 Saturday at Stanford Golf Course and was the medalist with a three-day total of 208.
