TONIGHT’S GAME

DODGERS’ RAMON MARTINEZ (2-1, 2.08 ERA) vs. BRAVES’ TOM GLAVINE (3-0, 1.95 ERA)

* Update-- The Dodgers realize that if they are going to reach the World Series for the first time since 1988, they’re probably going to have to defeat the Braves, who have won four of the last five National League pennants. Certainly, the Braves are proving once again they are the team to beat. This might be their finest team over the last five years because of their versatile offense. The Braves have the best record in baseball and are 11-1 in the first season at Turner Field. Their controversial trade with the Cleveland Indians is paying dividends. Leadoff hitter Kenny Lofton is batting .424, second in the league to Larry Walker of the Colorado Rockies. Lofton has stolen 11 bases--six more than the entire Dodger team. Shortstop Jeff Blauser is batting .386. The Dodgers, who defeated the Braves in seven of 12 games last season before being swept in the first round of the playoffs, catch a huge break in the series. They will miss Cy Young winners Greg Maddux and John Smoltz. Although Tom Glavine [3-0, 1.95 earned-run average] is one of the finest left-handers in the game, he has struggled against the Dodgers. Glavine was 0-2 with a 3.12 ERA against them last year and is 11-13 lifetime with a 3.97 ERA. Dodger catcher Mike Piazza is hitting .421 with two homers off Glavine, and Karros is batting .367 with four homers. Right fielder Raul Mondesi, who leads the Dodgers with six homers, is batting .143 against Glavine. * Tuesday, 4:30 p.m.--Chan Ho Park (0-1, 2.20) vs. Terrell Wade (0-0, 2.70)
