Youth / News for the 18-and-under crowd

Four students from high schools in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District have been named winners of Spectrum Leadership Awards, which provides scholarships to high school students who show outstanding leadership qualities.

Laurel Hafer was one of two seniors from Corona del Mar High School who earned the award. Hafer was editor of the school yearbook, a board member of Youth and Government and a member of the cross-country and track teams.

Ryan Williams, another winner from Corona del Mar High School, was editor in chief, business manager and news editor of the school newspaper. He was also vice president of the senior class, senate secretary of youth and government, junior class representative of the Key Club and a member of the cross-country and track teams, and is an Eagle Scout.

Tennyson Oyler and Katherine Weikel, both seniors at Newport Harbor High School, were also named winners in the program, which is sponsored by the Irvine Co.

Oyler was president of the senior class, co-captain of the varsity tennis and junior varsity soccer teams, and has served as vice chairman of the Newport Beach Youth Council.

Weikel has been a member of the associated student body at Newport Harbor, treasurer of the speech and debate clubs and section editor of the yearbook. She won second place in a national contest for creating Web sites on the Internet and is a volunteer at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian.

The students will be given $1,000 scholarships.
