Sabercats’ Offense Starts Fast, Then Holds On to Beat Piranhas

San Jose jumped out to a 14-0 lead before the Piranhas’ offense stepped on the field as the Sabercats defeated the Piranhas, 47-27, in front of 14,869 Saturday night at the San Jose Arena.

The Sabercats received the opening kickoff and scored on a 23-yard touchdown pass to Titus Dixon from John Kaleo. San Jose recovered the ensuing kickoff off the net in the end zone, scored and kicked the conversion to go up, 14-0.

Ian Howfield got the Piranhas on the board with a 30-yard field goal in the first quarter.

The Sabercats responded with a 28-yard touchdown pass to former Piranha William Pollard from Kaleo to take a 21-3 lead to end the first quarter.

The Sabercats continued to dominate as they outscored Anaheim, 9-3, in the second quarter to take a 30-6 lead at the end of the first half.

The Piranhas came out strong in the third quarter. Jai Hill returned an interception 40 yards for the first Anaheim touchdown of the night to cut the lead to 30-12.

The Sabercats responded with another Kaleo touchdown pass, this one a 25-yarder to Brent Cooper to push the lead back to 37-12.

The Piranhas then replaced quarterback Mark Grieb, who was starting his first game at quarterback, with Ron Lopez, who responded with two touchdown passes.
