St. Genevieve Hires Football Coach

St. Genevieve High has hired former Alemany assistant James Sims as football coach. Sims, 35, was an assistant to Pat Blackburn at Alemany in the 1990-91 seasons and has spent the past five seasons as an assistant at Torrance Bishop Montgomery.

Sims, a walk-on coach, replaces Bill Connor, who resigned after two seasons to take a position at Garden Grove High.

Damian Scribner, girls’ junior varsity basketball coach at Crescenta Valley High, has been promoted to varsity coach. Scribner replaces Marc Ward, who resigned in March.

Junior champ: Charlie Smith, a Hart High junior, shot a two-under-par 140 at the Anaheim Dad Miller Golf Course last weekend to win the 16-17 age division of the Anaheim City Junior Championship.

Smith edged Calabasas High junior Jon Ohye by one stroke.

Smoking Gunn: Agoura resident Roger Gunn, director of instruction at Lindero Country Club, advanced to the U.S. Open Sectional qualifying tournament by shooting a three-under-par 69 at Mission Viejo Country Club.

New coach: Peter Smith, who coached Fresno State to four consecutive NCAA Championships appearances, has been hired as men’s tennis coach at Pepperdine. Smith, 32, succeeds Chuck Willenborg, who took over the team in January after the abrupt resignation of Glenn Bassett.

Pepperdine, ranked 13th nationally, completed the season 22-7 in dual matches after being upset by UC Santa Barbara in the title match of the NCAA Region VIII Championships on Sunday.

Net result: The Cal State Northridge women’s tennis team finished 10-15 and tied for fifth in its first year in the Big Sky Conference.

Match rescheduled: A Southern Section Division II boys’ volleyball playoff match between Beverly Hills and Westlake will be played at 7 tonight at Westlake instead of Friday because of a scheduling conflict.
