Celebration to Open Recreation Center
A soccer tournament, arts and crafts displays, a health clinic and other activities will mark the grand opening of a new recreation center in Oxnard’s tough Southwinds neighborhood on June 14.
The $450,000 building was built at one corner of Southwinds Park on West Clara Street with federal money. In addition to serving as a neighborhood community-and-recreation center, the 2,700-square-foot building will house a police storefront.
Officials envision the center becoming a focal point for the community, which is trying to improve its reputation as one of the city’s most crime-ridden neighborhoods.
Civic leaders will be on hand for the celebrations, which are set to begin at 9:30 a.m. and continue until 6:30 p.m.
